Including a domain in a sale agreement does not automatically update its registration. Website files, mailboxes, payment accounts and DNS may sit with different suppliers. Prepare a separate handover plan and coordinate legal arrangements with your advisers. This guide focuses on the operational inventory.

Define what is being transferred

List all domains, spelling variants, old brands and campaign addresses. Identify the current and intended holder of each. Some transactions retain the same legal entity, while others change it. Ask the registrar which registration action matches the agreed transaction.

Separate holder change from registrar transfer

The buyer can retain the registrar or transfer later; that is separate from changing the holder. Establish consent, documents and processing requirements in advance. Share a transfer token securely at the agreed time. It does not move website files or mailbox contents; those need separate plans.

Inventory services and personal data

Document nameservers, DNS, mail, certificates, website platforms and recovery addresses. Mailboxes may contain personal or confidential information. Determine which data may transfer and which accounts need separation. Do not hand over a personal provider account containing unrelated assets or data.

Agree a verifiable handover point

Agree who can make changes and who handles incidents during transition. Afterwards, verify holder details, contacts, renewal responsibility and access rights. Test website and mail before revoking old access. A jointly confirmed checklist prevents each party assuming the other completed a crucial step.

Your practical checklist

  • Inventory all sold domains and services.
  • Separate holder changes from registrar transfers.
  • Review mailbox data and unrelated account contents.
  • Confirm registration, service availability and access afterwards.
In practice
A webshop sale inventories its main domain, an old brand domain and two mailboxes separately. The buyer initially retains DNS. A later platform migration is planned only after registration and access are confirmed.

Common questions

Must a domain always change registrar during a business sale?

No. A different holder or account manager does not automatically require a different registrar. First establish the intended holder after the transaction.
