Check domain and brand names before registering

A free domain is not a trademark clearance. Check existing businesses, brands and confusingly similar spellings before registering.

Check domain and brand names before registering: overview showing Domain check, Name research, Informed choice

A domain search checks registration availability, not permission to use a name for particular goods or services. Check the name separately before investing.

Look for existing users

Search the exact name, similar spellings and pronunciation in your intended markets. Existing use may appear on other extensions or as a local brand. Record uncertain matches for further investigation.

Separate availability from rights

Domain registration does not itself register a trademark or grant exclusive business-name rights. Buying more extensions does not change that. Seek qualified advice for a potentially conflicting name.

Find a distinctive alternative

If the preferred name is taken or confusing, create an alternative with its own identity. One extra letter or hyphen may not solve confusion. Test the new choice in speech, invoices and email.

Your practical checklist

  • Search exact and similar names.
  • Check the relevant market and category.
  • Separate registration from brand rights.
  • Get qualified advice for potential conflicts.
In practice
A technically available .nl very similar to an existing provider may still be unsuitable for your business.
